Chrysler Repair: 3.5L V-6: coolant temp sensor replacement, coolant temp, chrysler new yorker

Question
Hi Roland
I had asked you a question about my car having a hard time starting (acting as though it was flooded) only when it was cold. I checked the codes and got some funky ones..12 and 34..I don't think that's quite right. The more I read the more I think it may be my temp coolant sensor. Is that expensive..and how hard is it to put in a 1994 Chrysler New Yorker  3.5

Answer
Hi Linda,
Maybe you got a 12 and a 22 (=34?). The code for that sensor is 17 or 22, but you probably have a good idea to replace it. In any case the coolant temp sensor is located on the top side of the engine where the top radiator hose attaches to the housing that holds the thermostat. It is mounted vertically right next to that housing and it has two wires colored tan/black and black/light blue. All you have to do is carefully remove the plug (lift locking tab) and unscrew the old one. Be ready to put in the new one as coolant may flow out of the hole. You might put a little grease on the threads to prevent it from rusting in place. Tighten to 20 foot-pounds torque which is about the same as a spark plug.
It should be in the range of $10-20.
