Answer
Hi Kev,
The Chrysler electronic transaxle is a very complicated device and is often the cause of vehicles being sold/wreckered. I would only buy a trans like that used if you knew its history and could get a readout of the fault codes to see if any faults exist and what they are for evaluation as to whether it could be fixed without a rebuild. Rebuiling is very espensive.
Ideally try to find a van from a similar model year that may have a collision that damaged the body/frame so as to be wrecked, then bring a battery and try to readout the fault codes. The '96 is right on the edge of OBD-I and OBD-II systems. So look under the dash of the prospective vendor vehicle to see which  type of plug it has (6-pin or 16-pin). Then too you would want it to be similar in gearing to yours so it would need to come from a van of the same or very nearby model years. And you may want to get it trans controller too if it isn't from a '96 or it is from a different engine combo (which would not be a good idea).
