Chrysler Repair: normal coolant temperature, coolant temperature, gauge reading

Question
I have a 2004 Grand Am GT, realize not a Chrysler; but figured this question would apply to many cars.  What is a normal gauge reading for coolant temperature?
Thank you, Joseph Scala

Answer
Hi Joseph,
If your vehicle actually is calibrated in degrees F or C
the normal range should be around 195 to 220 F depending upon ambient conditions and loads on the cooling system.
The lower number is set for efficiency of the use of fuel, while the upper is guard against vaporization of the coolant. If you can be more specific I would try to offer more information that may be relevant to your needs. The upper limit is set by the combination of the coolant mixture and the pressurization level of the system. The fans are usually set to come on at around 205 to 220F (low and high speed, respectively.
