Chrysler Repair: 90 Lebaron temp guage, defective gauge, lebaron convertible

Question
The temp gauge in my 90 lebaron convertible with a 3.0L V6 just quit working, stays on cold. I replaced the coolant temp sending unit but the problem remains.  Do you have a wiring diagram to troubleshoot the problem, or should I just attempt to change the gauge cluster?

Answer
Hi Tom,
I assume that you have the conventional mechanical cluster.
The violet/yellow wire from the sender goes to pin 11 of the black connector at the cluster. Then the temp gauge connector in the board itself has three pins and sockets: When the ignition is "on" the bottom one should have 12V on it as measured across to the side one which is a common ground for all the gauges (pin 14 of the red connector, but that part of the circuit is ok because the other gauges work, so long as you have continuity from that pin to pin 14). The sender signal comes thru pin 11 of the black plug and is connected to the top pin of the gauge. So check that you have that continuity in the circuit board. It either has to be the wire from the sender to the plug, a break in the circuit board, of a defective gauge, which you can also test for continuity. These are pin assignments you need.
To get to the gauge:
remove switch pod assembly,
remove steering column shroud,
remove cluster trim bezel,
remove cluster mask and lens assembly,
remove screw attaching gauge assemble to cluster.
I can xerox copy and postal mail you some greater detail about the removals I listed. Just give me a mailing address via the comment section of the "thank and rate" tab.
I hope this will help you correct the problem.
