Chrysler Repair: 1991 New Yorker Fifth Ave: odo and speedometer dont work, cv joints, orange wire

Question
I bought this car from a friend of the family. when purchased it the speedometer and odometer where not working. the gentleman i bout it from said it was working 2 months ago until mice had chewed through some cables I have replaced everything but still cant get my speedo to work and odometer.  it has a different transmission in it and i have been told it could be the distance sensor but i hate to take it to a trainy shop because i am some what mechanically inclined. the wires from distance sensor and the main wirng loom r disconnected but they r 2 different colors not sure what I chould do any suggestions would be helpful

Answer
Hi Michael,
I am not exactly clear on the state of the wires from the distance sensor to the instrument cluster, and I believe the wires are unchanged in color between the distance sensor and the cluster (white/orange wire goes to pin c of the red plug at the cluster)(black/light blue goes to pin 4 of the 60 pin plug at the engine controller). So if you can verify with an ohmmeter that the 2 wires are patent from the sensor plug to the other two plugs then when you plug it back together it ought to work. If it doesn't, then the distance sensor is probably no good. You can probably get one from a wrecking yard for a modest price; a new one is about $75. It is held in place by a single bolt. They usually become damaged because an unknowing mechanic who is working on the cv joints of the right half shaft yank it forcefully out of the trans axle without first removing the sensor so the gear is damaged. I hope you can get your readout going again.
