Chrysler Repair: knocking sounds from front end, constantly, drive axles, strut rod

Question
The front end is make a knocking sound while I'm driving.  I took it to 2 repair shops and they said everything is fine and nothing is loose. What else could it be.  The sound is constant even when not hitting bumps.

Answer
Hi Ray,
You didn't mention whether the rate of knocking was constant regardless of speed or if it got faster/slower with speed changes. If constant, then I would suspect a suspension part either has a worn bushing or loose/detached bolt, specifially the anti-sway bar or strut rod, something associated with the up and down motion of the wheels. If the knocking is directly proportional to the speed then I would suspect that one of the four boots on the drive axles that retain the grease in the c.v. joints is torn and the joint has run of grease and thus is "clicking" every time the wheel turns a revolution. So take a look at those rubber boots to see if any of the four (one on each end of the two half axles) are torn or there is a rim of grease on the underside of the body directly over the location of the boot. You will probably have to jack up the front end to examine for there several possibilities. You might also be able to hear the knock from outside the car if you have a helper drive by slowly while you listen to try and get a fix on the location of the sound source.
Good luck on locating this problem's source. Let me know what you find and I might be able to advise you on how to repair it. But be sure to tell me the year and model of the car.
