Chrysler Repair: How to turn on heater of 1989 Chrysler with ATC, symbol button, power vacuum

Question
My daughter is away at college and she can't figure out how to turn on the heater on her New Yorker.  The unit has a digital readout and she has only figured out how to turn on the A/C.  I told her to read the manual but she couldn't figure it out.  Can you help me help her?

Answer
Hi Steve,
I believe that when the car is started the ATC control panel is activated and whatever temperature has been selected will be sought by the system. If it is cooler in the cabin than the readout indicates, the unit will try to heat the cabin. If the cabin is warmer than the readout indicates it will try to cool the cabin, either by drawing in external air (if it is cooler outside) or if the driver pushes the a/c button it will start the compressor and evaporator to create even cooler intake air. So she needs to decide what temp she would like it to be in the cabin using the right hand control panel. Then she can either choose how to distribute the air to the outlets (choosing among panel, floor, or windshield outlets or a combo thereof) and blower speed OR she can push "auto" and the unit will decide all those factors on it own.
As an example, if it is cold outside and in the cabin, she should select maybe a cabin temp of 72 and press "auto" and the unit should provide heat and distribute it properly to achieve that result. If the windshield is foggy she should push the windshield symbol button until it clears then change to another combo of distributions or "auto". She can terminate the ATC function entirely by pushing the 'off' button.
There are two temp sensors, one in the cabin and one outside the car behind the crossmember that supports the radiator. The one in the cabin has a minifan to aid in measuring the cabin air temp. The control of the air temp and its distribution directions is all done automatically by the computer controlled panel and the power vacuum/ module under the dash.
Have her read this, and the manual, to see if she can make it run the way she wants. If it doesn't seem to produce the desired result tell me what it is or isn't doing as there are built-in self-diagnostics that will reveal the cause of many possible faults.
