Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Restarting mower in spring, fuel hose, gunk

Question
We inherited a Craftsman 6.0 mower that hasn't been started last season. The
gasoline hasn't been drained, however it has a broken fuel hose and I'm sure
most of the fuel leaked out. I have a new fuel hose and will fix it. Overall it
hasn't been used very much. What do I need to do to get it ready for the
season and start it?

Answer
The fuel left in the carb will be the biggest problem.  I tell folks
in the spring to remove the air filter, then the engine oil, then
I tell them to turn the mower upside down on some old cardboard
and leave the mower in the sun for the day.
Then turn it back over, fill with new sae 30 oil, and fresh fuel, and try to start.  This allows the old fuel and gunk drain out and
dry up, the fresh fuel, and a squirt or two in the intake with carb spray when starting, and the varnish may dissolve on its own, otherwise you might have to disassemble and clean the carb.
Give that a try and let me know
