Classic/Antique Car Repair: tires on 60 Studebaker Hawk, 1960 Studebaker Tires

Question
I am receiving a 60 Stude Hawk, and it needs new tires.  I've been recommended to use P195/75 R 15s.  I'm not sure what is on it right now, but I will know in a few days.  I can get tires of that size.  Would that be best, or should I go to a P205 I a size I have on a little 60 Stude Lark)?

Thanks.  Jim.

Answer
Hello James,

Reviewing the recommendations from the Studebacker Drivers Club, the 205's seem to work best as long as rim width is about 5". Supposedly, stock rims are 4.5" and while they will work, the narrower rim won't allow the car to handle optimally. However, another member was successfully using 5.0" wide Ford rims.

In general, all other things being equal, I feel the wider tire helps handling, lenghtens tread life and overall makes the car look better.

Hope this helps,

Bob
