QuestionQUESTION: Hey Jack,
I went over my car inch by inch on the wiring I can't find anything touching or any breaks in the wiring, followed wires from battery only place I haven't checked is the steering column not sure how to do that, or what to attempt next. the horn and lights don't work when I hook up the battery the fuse assembly immediately starts to smoke, so not much use of trying to start it at this point. I believe the past owner had it mostly as a trailer queen I'd like to use it daily for the summer months. I look forward to your suggestions Jack, have a good day.
ANSWER: Lets start over. Remove the wire connection at the generator. That is the light harness. That takes all the lights and horn out of the system. Then see what you have.
If you do have to take the light switch off, it is easy. There is a wire bale that snaps over it holding it into the bottom of the strg. column.

QUESTION: I removed the light circuit from the generator yesterday as you suggested and still have the short I noticed soot around the light circuit left terminal connection, I'm assuming this is an indication of part of my problem and the horn and lights not working. I looked at the wire bale with the wire snap that part looks easy enough, but how do you disconnect the assembly from the other end of the wire bale column within the steering column ?
AnswerIf the light harness is disconnected, and the short is still there, it has nothing to do with the lights. It can't. Leave that disconnected, and, using an ohm meter, leave the fuse out and check between the fuse holder and ground. Everything you check in the hot side should have no communication with ground.
