Classic/Antique Car Repair: Fuel Filter/ maybe fuel pump leak, 1954 Mercury V8 fuel pump

Fuel filter was leaking on 1954 Mercury with 256 ci 8 cylinder. May have been from the fuel pump? But it only leaked for a short time and then stopped. Do I have to worry about this?

Hello Larry,

I wasn't able to tell from your description whether you have a single action (electric wipers) or a dual action (vacuum wipers) pump so I'm assuming that you have the later with a glass sediment bowl.

The first place I'd look is to check the mating surfaces between the glass bowl and the pump. Clean both sides thoroughly with a good solvent like lacquer thinner. Also check your gasket. Is it pinched, old or excessively compressed? Replacements are widely available from places like Rock Auto, Macs Antique Auto parts or even your local NAPA store (you might have to order it)

And yes, you should give the problem immediate attention although it's not currently leaking.  Unfortunately, cars don't usually fix themselves and the lack of leaking may just be coincidental. Leaking gas can catch fire even down low like your fuel pump. At least take it apart to clean it and be sure.

This would also be an excellent opportunity to clean out any water and sediment in your glass fuel bowl. After all, this is the primary fuel filter on your car.
