Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1962 cadillac steering noise, Steering box repairs

Question
While engine is running and if you turn the wheel 1/4 turn either way or back and forth or if you turn a corner and make several revolutions I get this grinding noise and can feel it in the steering wheel. I think I have narrowed it down to the pump or the steering box and think the noise might be telegraghing up the column. when engine is not running, you guessed it, no noise. any Ideas?

Answer
Those steering boxes are very tricky to work on.  Don't even think about rebuilding it yourself - take it to NAPA or another parts store and have them send it out for rebuilding.

Before you do that, verify that the noise is coming from the box itself, and not the pump, because the pump is simple and easy to rebuild, and much cheaper to replace.

To verify where the noise originates, have a helper work the controls to produce the noise, while you listen with a stethoscope (if you have one) or with a 4 foot length of garden hose held against your good ear with the other end (of the hose!!) against the steering box and then the pump with your finger in your other ear.   I'm guessing it is the box, not the pump, but do this first to make sure.
