Classic/Antique Car Repair: !978 Corvette wont start, corvette pace car, spark plug wires

Question
Hi, I'm having a problem with my 78 Corvette Pace car that will not start.  It has an L48 350 motor with 3200 original miles. I've never had a problem starting this car in the five years that I've had it.  On Sunday, I tried, the starter turns but will not catch.  The battery is strong but after a few cranks a strong fuel smell was apparent.  Tried 2-3 more times but no avail.  I also tried a shot of ether, nothing but the starter cranking.  The oil also smells like fuel..  Not good, I know but I am pretty confused on how to proceed..  I really do not work on cars but I have general knowledge of where everything is..What do you think??

Answer
Ok, an engine needs three things to run, fuel, compression, and spark. Since you smell fuel and you have given it a shot of either with no results, we can rule out the lack of fuel, but perhaps there is too much fuel like a flooding carburetor. I would check for spark next. You can do this with a spark checker available at most auto parts stores or use a spark plug connected to one of the spark plug wires. Crank the engine over with the spark plug shell grounded and watch for spark jumping the electrode. If there is no spark then ignition service is needed and a more complete diagnosis. If there is spark and still the engine does not run then a compression test is in order to determine if there is any internal engine compression problems.
God Luck, Brad
