Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1970s spitfire lost title, british car club, motor vehicle department

Question
Hi!  We have an old spitfire sitting on our property that we decided to give away, but we don't have any title or papers to give with it.  How hard is it to find a title, or can the new owner eventually register it some other way?  At the moment, the car is just a rusting hulk and needs extensive work or can be used as parts.  We live in CT.

Thanks,
Betht

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
Each state has different laws pertaining to titles. In many states if you have a vehicle on your property for a long time and have no title you can apply for a title by applying a storage or labor lien against the vehicle. You may have to run an ad in your local paper for a length of time. Just contact your local motor vehicle department for the details and procedures. It is usually not expensive. In most states you don't have to be in any kind of business to do this.
Another option is to contact a British car club in your area and usually someone in the club can advise you on the procedures. Most clubs have a few members who restore British cars and have had to use the procedure.
I hope this helps. Sorry I can not be specific for CT as I am in TN.
