Classic/Antique Car Repair: tr6 J type reverse, cone clutch, output shaft

Question
Just installed Jtype od The reverse worked fine although a little difficult to get into. Reverse was used about 6 or 7 times and then nothing, it tries to pull but nothing. It is a rebuilt trans, shipped with the top cover loose to chk if something had slid in shipment? Wonder if fork has slipped over or pin has sheared? Confession, don't know much about inside the trans, however I did install it and that went well.

Answer
Hi Grant,
You need to clarify, "It tries to pull but nothing".
It shifts into reverse but stalls the engine?
It don't shift into reverse?
It shifts into reverse and when you let the clutch out it just don't pull?
Is there any noise when reverse is attempted to be used?

Other questions, Someone rebuilt the trans to accept an O/D?
The main shaft (output shaft) of a standard trans will not accept an O/D. To install an O/D on a standard trans you must replace the trans main shaft (output shaft).

There are a number of things that can go wrong to stop reverse from working, The bolt holding the end of the shift rail could be loose, the bolt holding the reverse actuator to the shift rail could be loose, The bolt on the side of the trans that supports the reverse shift lever/fork could have been loose. The reverse shift fork could have broken off.
If you have the tunnel out of the car you can put it into neutral and remove the top cover to see if anything is loose or broken.
If you shift into reverse and try to back up and it tries to stall the engine but goes OK in the forward gears then the O/D cone clutch is stuck and locked in the cone ring in the O/D. If this is the case you must not try to back up or you will destroy the O/D.
Let me know.
