Classic/Antique Car Repair: MGA left rear brake, silicone brake fluid, silicone fluid

Question
Hi. The left rear brake locks up before the other 3 have engaged. The others finaly engage and work, and all release when the pedal is released. Any possible solutions or online sources for more info? I have a original 1960 MGA rdstr. I use silicone brake fluid.

Answer
Hi Don,
The silicone fluid most likely has nothing to do with the problem unless you have a leak in the right rear wheel cylinder. First, drive on a smooth dirt road slowly and pull up on the hand brake and note if one rear wheel locks before the other.
Remove the left rear drum and closely examin the shoes and notice which way the notched adjuster is rotated to adjust the brakes and note which way the shoes are installed. Then compare that with the right rear shoes and note the adjuster direction. Also look at the drum surface of each. Were both adjusted the same? Make sure the hand brake does not have either in a bind and adjust each until you stop the wheel when hand rotating and back off the adjuster untill the wheel turns free by hand but you can just hear a little drag (light scraping sound) Afterward, pump the brakes several times and check both again.
let me know,
Howard
