Question -
Hi Roger-my manual says to use type A transmission fluid- do
you know what that is?

Answer -
Joe ; yes it is  a type of fluid that was made for fords
and a separate for gm vechs. and  mopar. now most all  use the
std. ATF  fluid

Answer -
Joe ;
I would try to find the type A  as most auto sales parts should
have it.I would not mix the two if I did not have to.

Answer -
Joe I did not think it was so hard to find it , I would go to a
tranny shop  and ask them what you can use in place of it. or try
strauss type  store or aids , now Im going to look into it as I did
not think it was so hard to find. ok
I know  back when they had the two types  a and atf  it was one
or the other you can not mix them .

Answer -
Joe ; where do you live ?
those are two large auto stores that are all over in the states..

Answer
wow I cant believe that thay have none down there ,  but any of the larger auto parts shops should have what you need  or the type that you can use. but  do not mix  it with any fluid that  it is not stated on the can  as it can do you harm , I think that what you need is the type F
and I think type A just stands for automatic and it is now type F   .   and if its dirty I would change the filter and screen.
