Classic/Antique Car Repair: water leakage, rain gutter, dodge monaco

Question
Hello Dick - other than sometimes starting or not the next problems is water leakage on my 1973 Dodge Monaco. I carry 2 (two) one gallon buckets in the  trunk to catch the water ( sometimes  half full over night) on each side of the trunk lid hinges.  The water drips (runs) out of the square metal  section running  from hinge to hinge. But where does it get IN ?  I put sealer  around the window chrome  , both sides, the rain gutter both sides and along the  chrome strip separating the vinyl roof from the body rear. Do you have any idea ? The carpeting in the trunk really gets soaked without the above bucket  'solution'
Thanks , Herman

Answer
My guess would be that there are serious rust problems under the vinyl top, especially in the panel below the rear window glass.   Of course I can only guess, without seeing the car, but if you lay inside the trunk with a flashlight, then have a "VERY GOOD FRIEND WHOM YOU TRUST!" close the lid and flood the rear window area with a garden hose, you should be able to see where the water is coming through.  If this doesn't work, you might have to have the vinyl top peeled back for an inspection of the metal.

My 69 Coupe DeVille had a section of metal below the glass completely eaten away - and the prior owner had just installed a new vinyl top on the car so that it looked just fine, until I poked at the vinyl.  Oops!  We don't see this sort of thing in CA, but this car was from somewhere east of the Rockies.

I had the vinyl top removed and new metal welded in for the panel below the glass.  That stopped the puddle in the rear floor completely.
