Dodge Repair: Engine Knock, 2005 grand caravan, rocker shaft

Question
I have a 2005 Grand Caravan 3.3 liter. It has an engine knock that will not go away. I have brought it to the local dealer over 7 times and they acknoweldge there is a knock and continue to tell me they can not correct it. I have to fuel up with high grade gas just to slow the knok enough to be able to drive the car. It has 22k mikes and the issue has been around since about 8k miles. They have cleaned the entire fuel system, replaced plugs and wires. I do not know where to turn, as the dealer cannot fix it?

Answer
Well, if it were an older 3.3/3.8L I would be suspicious of a broken cylinder head.  There are towers that stick up that hold the rocker shaft in place and the one closest to the belt would frequently break causing a tap/knocking noise from up top.

But I've not seen the 05 generation have that problem and most of the late previous body styles didn't exhibit as many of the problems.

Are you sure it's the engine and not the a/c compressor maybe?  They've got a serious problem with failing.  So bad chrysler not only had a recall but extended the warranty on those NOT covered by the recall.  Just a thought, turn on the a/c and turn it off to see if the noise changes.

Finally, I would say call chrysler.  You've had this car for a while, you've gone in to the dealer with no success numerous times, and you've jumped through all of their hoops only to still have a noisy car.

Without hearing it I couldn't begin to tell you which areas I would question.  Also what one person calls a knock the other calls a tap which the last calls a click.  So that doesn't really help.  But definitely go to the next level with Chrysler.  They have been known to send out tech advisers to the dealerships if you raise your voice loud enough.
