Ford Repair: Ford Ranger ABS Issue, ford ranger xlt, wheel bearing hub assembly

Question
QUESTION: Hi Brian & Thank You for providing this service  :)

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT, 4x4 that has had an issue for about the past year --I just haven't done anything about it.  When I am just about completely stopped the brake pedal kicks back & you can hear the ABS sound ---- but only 1 pulse --- that's it, nothing more.   My ABS light works, but is NOT on.  I recently replaced my front rotors & pads, which did not affect the issue at all.

I've heard 2 possible issues --- 1.) a dirty or bad ABS sensor & 2.) a bad hub... a mechanic told me the hubs get rusty & the corrosion somehow messes with the abs & the only way to fix it is to replace the hub (which I think he said also holds the bearing).

What's your opinion, based on the symptoms?  Remember, the ABS light works but does NOT come on.

Thanks again,

Frank

ANSWER: this is a very common concern caused by a bad bad wheel bearing/hub assembly. do you hear what seems like a loud noise from the front while driving ? if so, does it change when turning the wheel left or right lightly and moving ?

QUESTION: Hi ... no, no noise at all coming from the bearings.  The truck is quiet.

Answer
the other issue is possible. there is a sensor mounted in the center of the rear differential. held in with one ten millimeter bolt. remove it and clean it and retest. try this and get back to me- p.s. it may require a little effort to remove this sensor. after removing the bolt twist the sensor left to right several times while pulling up on it
