Ford Repair: ABS and brake lights, 2003 Windstar, computer diagnostic tools, hydraulic control

Question
Occasionally the ABS and brake light come on. After I stop the and restart they
are off. It may go for days without doing this. Brake fluid is okay. Brakes are
okay. My mechanic says he can't retrieve a code unless I get it to him when the
lights are on. The brakes seem to be working fine all the time.

Answer
Hello Brian, Your mechanic is correct, if the light is not on most computer diagnostic tools can not retrieve a code. Being a Windstar my guess is a possible faulty ABS HCU (hydraulic control unit) and or a ECM (electronic control module). Can be expensive to repair and does not really effect normal braking. If it was mine I'd live with the light for a good while. Hope this helps Thanks Tony
