Ford Repair: engine sputters, duratec, ford escape

I have a 2001 Ford Escape (3.0L DOHC V6 Duratec). When my fuel tank is low on gas, my engine kind of sputters when you start it(Like it is going to stall) but when I get gas, like a half a tank or more it dosn't. Could this be a fuel filter problem or something else? Thanx

You should probably get the vehicle checked for codes. There may be a problem with the fuel system, EVAP system, or the calibration of the PCM. I found one safety recall that might relate to this-04S13 is a reprogam of the PCM to update for a problem between the idle control and the EVAP system.
