Ford Repair: Ford Explorer Headlight Aim, headlamp beam, ford dealer

Question
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer.  The headlights shine directly to the ground about 25 feet ahead of the vehicle.  It has been back to the Ford dealer where I bought it many times and they say they are fine "on the board".  Well, I just found out that they do not have a board and they refuse to do anything about it.  I travel a lot and I rent Explorers all the time.  The headlights are not like mine - they shine down the road, so I know mine are wrong!

I have found the headlight aim screws under the hood.  My question is - which way do I turn them to raise the headlight aim?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
If your driveway is pretty level, park about 25 feet away from the garage door and shine the lights on the door, probably evening or night so you can see the beams. Measure from the ground to the center of the headlamp, then make a mark on the wall or door at this height. Adjust the top of the highest intensity of the headlamp beam to touch the mark you made. That should put you close.

I don't understand why the dealer wouldn't do this for you, unless they don't have the equipment or the expertise. The equipment required is not cheap, some shops don't adjust lights for that reason. The method I described is a basic setup, so don't get too high with them or you may be subject to a ticket.

As far as which way to turn the adjusters, you'll figure that out as you watch the beam move.
