Ford Repair: 95 Cougar Odometer, cougar xr7, salvage yard

Question
Clay- I have a 95 Cougar XR7 (4.6L) The odometer quit working at 52,000 miles, the speedo still works. I have tried changing out the instrument cluster to no avail..no fuses are blown.  I'm told a sensor on or in the transmission may be the culprit. Any suggestions on I can go about repairing this?

Answer
Keith, you didn't tell me if the cluster is electronic display or analog gauges, but either way - the odometer is driven by the same VSS input that the speedo uses, so there is no need to investigate the speed sensor or fuses...
If the speedo is analog, you probably have a broken tooth on the gears that roll the numbers around... a new speedo assembly is the way to replace that, and you might find one in a salvage yard cheaply, then transfer the needed components to your cluster.
If the cluster is digital, that's a major expense and not likely to find a good one in the salvage yards.  I have seen a few on EBay, but beware - the electronics are prone to failure from rough handling and electrostatic discharge.
Hope this helps...
Happy New Year!
