Ford Repair: 91 Explorer wont start, starter solenoid, light hook

Question
I have a 91 ford explorer - brand new battery.
It was running fine... until now
(1) starter just clicks. lights and dashboard OK
Battery is new, took it out and it has 12.2 volts and plenty of cranking amps.
(2) Put the battery back in and now I get nothing, no lights, no clicks or anything.

I've heard of problems with the ford explorer battery + and _ cables causing problems.

What do you suggest I check (I'm not a mechanic but am willing to do some basic repair before I give up and have the car towed to a shop?

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Get a test 12v light. Hook clip to neg(-) of the battery and start checking for voltage. First, check at the starter solenoid on the fender wall. Check the pos.(+). Then have some one try and start it while checking for voltage at the trigger wire going to the solenoid. Then, while they are try to start it still, go under (have the vehicle in PARK(AT) or NEUTRAL(MT), and E-brake applied) the vehicle and check for voltage at the starter pos.(+) cable, and also trigger wire.
You'll most likely find that you have a bad starter and or starter solenoid.
Hope this helps,
Erik
