Honda Repair: 1990 Honda Accord Lx, advance auto parts, speedometer needle

Question
I recently purchased this used car.  It has 127800 miles on it.  The speedometer needle consistently  goes to zero as I'm driving and the "Sports mode" light starts to blink and continues to blink until I turn the engine off, no matter how far I drive.  About 10 minutes into driving, the check engine light comes on and stays on.
My questions: what should I be concerned about? Is the engine okay?  Why does the speedometer fail?  I really am unable to gauge how fast/slow I'm going.

Answer
Okay, I'll answer your questions one at a time...
Speedo- Can be one of two things, or both!
  1. Speed sensor located on transmission, in the rear by rear engine mount. It has two hoses going to it and one electrical coupler. Can be bought on E-Bay much cheaper than any place else.
  2. Speedo cluster it self. Cheapest when bought from a salvage yard. Try www.car-part.com.
Sport light flashes- This is caused by the transmission ecu located under the pass side carpet, right next to the engine ecu. Trans ecu is the smaller of the two computers found there. Most of the guys I know will tell you that as long as the trans shifts okay, leave the ecu alone!!! There is another problem with these ecu's that will make the shift pattern go to sh__! So if you can't live with the flashing, try www.car-part.com.
Check engine light can be anything emissions related under the hood. Have the "codes pulled" at any Auto Zone or Advance Auto parts stores for free! If I had to guess I'd say it's the oxegen sensor, but don't replace it untill yuou know for sure! They are not cheap, and you don't want used or factory. Buy after market, it will save a bunch!!!!
 Hope this helps!!
