Honda Repair: 91 ACCORD SHUTTING OFF, electrical portion, loose wire

Question
SOMETIMES WHEN YOU START THE CAR IT WILL START MISSING LIKE YOU HAVE PULLED A PLUG WIRE. THE TACH WILL START JUMPING UP & DOWN. SOMETIMES THIS WILL HAPPEN GOING DOWN THE ROAD (TACH JUMPS FROM 2000 TO 4000+ RPM) BUT THE MOTOR IS NOT TURNING THAT RPM. AT TIMES IT WILL KILL THE ENGINE. HONDA HAS PUT ON 2 COILS, PLUGS, CAP & ROTOR AND WIRES.THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ONLY 10-15 % OF THE TIME. THE REST OF THE TIME IT RUNS OK. I THINK IT IS ELEC BECAUSE OF THE TACH JUMPING BUT COULD THE FUEL INJ BE SHUTTIG OFF?  HELP ME PLEASE  91 ACCORD

Answer
Johnny,
Thanks for your question.
Well the tach jumping around usually indicates a bad coil. But you said they did the coil twice? Humm. Let see. The miss could also be the coil, but I think it is time to start looking elsewhere.
The first thing you need to check is the battery terminals. A loose battery terminal will cause this problem also. Another thing to check is the ignition switch. Bad contacts in the electrical portion will kill the motor also. Wiggle the key while it is in the switch while the car is cutting out. Does it get better?
If not, then somewhere you have a loose wire or bad connection somewhere. I don't think it is an individual cylinder that is mis-firing. Just something that is cutting out the ignition. A bad ground with excessive resistance can cause this also. Check all the grounds under the hood. If you have to, remove the ground bolt and clean the surface where it contacts. I really think that is where your problem lyes. A bad ground. (check the ground going to the tranny and also the one in the thermostat housing)
The fuel injection is one of the last places I would suspect a problem.
Thanks,
Gene
