Hyundai Repair: Gas shut off - 2007 Hyundia Elantra GL, fuel nozzle, visual checks

Question
When trying to fill the gas tank, the pump keeps shutting off when the tank is not full.

Please let me know what it is and how to fix it.  Also what the estimated cost might be.

Answer
Hi, Ricky.  Unfortunately, this can be a difficult problem to diagnose.  As such, it's also impossible to estimate the cost, since we do not know the problem.  If your car has less than 60,000 miles, I'd expect it to be covered by your new vehicle warranty unless it's caused by the canister filter or some sort of physical damage to the vehicle.

Problems causing premature fuel nozzle shut-off fall into two basic categories:  problems that prevent venting of the fuel tank as new gas enters, and problems that prevent fuel from entering the tank.  These could be kinked hoses or lines, a clogged canister filter, restricted canister, defective fuel cut valve, restricted filler neck, or defective or damaged fuel tank.

Presuming you're not able to do any diagnosis on this yourself, you'll need to take the car to the dealer or another shop with an exemplary record in driveability diagnosis.

If you'd like to give some basic diagnostics a try yourself, follow-up, and I'll assist you with some visual checks.
