Hyundai Repair: Throttle Position Sensor Switch, throttle position sensor, hyundai santa fe

Question
I need to replace the sensor in my 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe 4Cyl - and I wondered if this was an easy thing or do I need to bring it to a mechanic?  The car was checked by Auto Zone and the read out mentioned the sensor might be the problem so i purchased a new one.  Thank you.

Answer
I'd probably feel better if I knew the actual numerical trouble code, but in most cases when a throttle position sensor code is set, the problem is indeed in the sensor.  In a not insignificant number of cases, however, on of the sensor wires has broken near the sensor itself.

The actual replacement of the sensor is fairly simple-- just unbolt the two screws holding the old one in place, bolt the new sensor into place, and then transfer the electrical connector onto the new sensor.  But when the sensor is replaced, it'll need to be adjusted.  To do this, you'll need a voltmeter or scan tool capable of reading the data from the engine control module.  Loosen the attaching bolts and then turn the sensor until you've obtained the desired voltage (300 - 900 mV).

If you don't have the appropriate tooling to adjust the sensor, you're probably better having a mechanic install it for you (and perhaps perform diagnostics on the issue).
