Hyundai Repair: timing belt, hyundai elantra, timing belt

Question
i have an 2002 Hyundai elantra and need to replace the timing belt and was wondering if i do that do i need to replace the water pump as well and is it behind the timing belt

Answer
You won't *need* to replace it unless it's leaking.  On the other hand, some people believe it's a good idea to do so even if it isn't leaking.  If it begins leaking in the future, you'll need to go back through all the labor of removing the timing belt just to remove the water pump whereas doing it at the same time will only cost you a small amount of additional labor in addition to the cost of the water pump, gasket, and coolant.

I don't think there's a one-fits-all recommendation here.  You'll need to weigh the cost to you of the labor (whether in real dollars or in amount of time) of replacing the water pump on its own, the cost of replacing it in addition to the timing belt, the likelihood there will be a failure (which is hard to predict), and how each will impact you personally.
