Hyundai Repair: Fuel from exhaust, hyundai excel 1995, air flow sensor

Question
I bought myself a Hyundai excel 1995 and i have had everything wrong with it. i have managed to do most stuff myself so far, but my latest problem is a hard one. When i start up the car, it has black smoke and fuel coming out of the exhaust, and it has seemed to have lost a little power. I do have a big split in my air intake and i thought maybe i'm not getting enough air in the combustion chamber and it's not combusting properly, therefore excess fuel. Do you think that i am on the right track or is there something else you can think of. (sorry i cant tell you how it drives at the moment because i don't have selector cables to drive it yet)

Answer
If you're leaking air into the intake hose between the air flow sensor and the throttle body, the air flow sensor readings will be grossly erroneous.  Since the air flow sensor is a major input to ECM (engine control module) operating strategy, the car will most certainly not run properly, and you may have a host of undesireable symptoms like those you have.

I'd start with replacing the air hose and getting the car to where you can drive it.  Once you're able to drive it, it'll be easier to discern problems that may make it perform poorly.
