Hyundai Repair: timing belt, hyundai dealer, level surface

Question
I recently had the timing belt replaced on my 2002 Santa Fe. While I now realize I should have had Hyundai do it I didn't and let my local mechanic do it.  Now, when shifting it sounds like it's sucking in air (mechanic says air filter is okay) and it's takes the tack way up before shifting.  Any suggestions are welcome.  I'm feeling like it needs adjustments of some kind

Answer
What you're describing is called a shift flare and is an issue with the transmission.  I cannot think of anything your mechanic would have done in replacing the timing belt that should affect the transmission.

The next time you drive your vehicle for twenty minutes or more, check the transmission fluid.  After the trip, park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake, place the shifter in neutral, and leave the engine running.  Then check the transmission fluid level.  It should be between the "hot" marks on the dipstick.  If it's low, it could be causing the problem you describe.  If not, I recommend taking the vehicle to the Hyundai dealer for diagnosis.
