Hyundai Repair: hyundai electric fuel pump, electric fuel pump, heavy equipment mechanic

Question
ok the relay is a 4 prong relay, its in a small relay socket board under the dash to the left of the brake pedal , by the ecm, there is a flasher in this panel also, i checked the volts at the relay socket 13.5 vdc.with the harness hooked up at the fuel pump i checked the volts also 13.5 vdc, i checked the ground wire 35.7 oms, didnt sound like enough to me , i taped into the ground wire ran it to body ground, the car started and ran for about 5 mins, the relay still buzzez and gets hot, so hot you can smell it and it will burn your fingers, also the battery will run down in about 10 mins, with the key off and out , the relay socket for the fuel pump, still has 13.5 vdc on it.with the relay in and the key on , you can lay your hand on the pump , and it feels like it it just barley runing, after i grounded it you could feel it running pretty good, im a heavy equipment mechanic, have been for 25 years, cat, cummings, detroit, cranes , dovers, stuff like that, im kinda out of my comfort zone, 2 dealers say they dont know what to do but throw hrs, at it at 75.00 dollors a hr, im thinking about wireing in a relay to key on to the pump through the enertia switch , i need some help here bad, any thing you can think of is really appreaceated, keith .....

Hi, Keith.  I think the relay you're talking about may be the ECM control relay, not the fuel pump relay.  If you could let me know the following information, it'll help me understand what's happening.

Is the relay that's buzzing in a small relay panel with some other relays, or is it by itself?

Why did you run a ground wire? Where did you run it from? What is it grounding?

Is the battery fully charged?

Does the check engine lamp illuminate fully for at least a few seconds when the key is turned to the "on" position?

Answer
Yep, that's definitely the fuel pump relay, then.

35 Ohms on the ground wire from the fuel pump is too much.  Presuming you've got a sedan, the ground lug is located behind the left side b-pillar trim.

If your battery will only hold a charge for ten minutes with the car off, you should start with either charging the battery or replacing it, whichever is necessary to have a battery that's in good condition.  The ECM controls the fuel pump relay.  If your battery voltage is too low, the ECM cannot properly operate.

Speaking of which, why is your battery in such poor condition?  Was your alternator working properly?  Had your air bag lamp been coming on?

Checking at the back of the relay with a voltmeter with the relay plugged in, you should have the following:
1.  White/blue wire: battery voltage at all times
2.  Yellow/red wire: battery voltage (roughly) only when fuel pump is energized
3.  White/yellow wire: battery voltage (roughly) only with key on and fuel pump not energized; ground only with key on and fuel pump energized.
4.  Red/white wire: battery voltage with key on.

If you'd like to look at the schematic yourself, you can register for a free account at www.hmaservice.com.  The site requires Internet Explorer, and you'll probably need Adobe SVG Viewer (a free download) to see the schematics.

You don't have an inertia switch, so wiring from there isn't a possibility.
