Hyundai Repair: 98 Hyundai Accent drops out of gear, hyundai accent, thanks in advance

Question
ok, heres a good one,... if you can answer this I'll marry you!  j/k on a serious note..., as I said I have a 98 accent (automatic)(gs? I think)  hatchback with 102k miles, i've had it 3 1/2 years, about a month after i got it i noticed (definately couldnt help but notice!) the car would drop out of gear, seems like it dropped down to 1st, the rpm's reved way up and the car would "lock up", like i hit the brakes,or if u dropped it into 1st while going too fast, it has only done it at speeds of 40mph or lower, but im afraid it might decide to do it at +++ speeds, anyway at any speed its dangerous because i could get rear ended or something worse could happen. so anyway ill try to make this story short, i had the codes checked replaced sensors and BOOM, it still does it.  so if u can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.   thanks in advance :)

Answer
Hi, Tara.  This could be a sensor issue, but from what you describe, it's more likely an issue with the transmission itself.

As always, the more information I have, the better.  If you can respond with the following information, it would be great.

When the condition occurs, does it act more like it's in a low gear, or more like you accidentally bumped the shifter into neutral?

If you can, tell me the codes that were present when you had them read.

Do you know whether the repair facility cleared the old codes when they did the repairs?

What sensors were replaced?
