Isuzu Repair: brakes slow to stop, power brake booster, isuzu rodeo

Question
The brakes on my Isuzu Rodeo are very sluggish when I first start driving - especially in cool weather. It takes about 10-15 feet to stop when pressing hard on the brake pedal. It sometimes takes 5 to 10 minutes for the brakes to start acting right. I've had everything checked, and the mechanic (giving up) says it's just the way the brakes are. But it is really scary! The former owner disconnected the ABS, but that's not supposed to affect the car's braking ability...Anything else I can do?

Answer
Hmm. This is strange behavior indeed. One thing I can think of is that you might have a leak in the diaphragm of the power brake booster, or even in one of the vaccuum lines. But realy, there are so many possible causes. Could you send me the details of what exactly has already been checked so that I can more accurately diagnose the problem?
