Jaguar Repair: XJ6 Alternator Follow Up, fan blades, voltage output

Question
QUESTION: Hi again Howard,

Sorry to keep starting a new question thread but there doesn't seem to be a way to do a second follow up question other than the first one I can do whenever you give an answer.

To bring you up to date all seems to be well at the moment. To answer your question regarding the pulley, the replacement did not come with one so I had to swap over the existing one. I do think I may have had a washer in the wrong place because I was working late at night and was exhausted and just managed to put it behind when it should have went in front. This caused the pulley to be slightly off kilter and make the fan blades scrape just a bit. I took it off and remounted it and it's fine now.

The weird part is that the alternator didn't appear to be charging at all that night or the next morning when I checked it. Yet right before I started to remount the pulley I checked voltage output and it was okay at 13.87v. So I'm not sure how it righted itself. I thought perhaps the pulley being off a bit may have been causing the non output but this check was done prior to my fixing the pulley.

Ah, the mysteries of the Jag!

So I'm on the right track now. I do have some questions regarding my instruments but I'll give you a break for now so you can help others.

Thanks so much Howard!

ANSWER: Sounds good, sometimes if the battery is fully charged the rate will show low. But 13.8 v is good.

QUESTION: Hi Howard,

Thanks for the get back. I'm a assuming that you meant to say that if the battery ISN'T fully charged the rate will show low? That might be the case because even though it was a brand new battery it might not have had a full charge depending upon how long it sat on the shelf I suppose. Also, I was just running on battery power for a few miles before the wiring seemed to have cured itself when I remounted the pulley.

So if that is the case then all's well that ends well as they say.

I'll be in touch with some future questions. I'm not sure if I mentioned previously that I have a 1976 Triumph Spitfire and I'm actually the original owner. Bought it off the showroom floor when I was 18 years old!

Currently trying to bring it back to life so when I'm up and running on that project I'm sure I will need to pick your brain a bit then.

Thanks!

Rick

Answer
No, the regulator cuts back and lowers the charge rate when the battery is closer to fully charged.

Cool, that you were able to hold on to the Spitfire. let me know when you start on it if you have any problem, I use to work on a few of them and may be able to help in some cases.
