Jaguar Repair: Remove rear door window motor - 85 VP, jaguar series, vanden plas

Question
85 Vanden Plas US California.  I have removed the LH rear door panel and disconnected the 2 wires going to the window motor.  There is battery voltage to the window motor leads when I rock the switch (either negative or positive 12.7V (or so) depending on switch position), so I know there is power to the window motor.  However, the window will not move.

I have the Jaguar Series III Service Manual, but I don't understand the instructions.  Section 86.25.09 says
"Remove the four pan-headed setscrews and detach the regulator mechanism from the door panel".  What's the regulator and where is it?

Section 86.25.09 goes on to say
"Adjust the position of the door until the regulator arm can be removed from the channel".  Boy am I confused!  What's the channel, where is it located and what is its orientation?

I don't want to blunder here.  Could you please describe as exactly as you are able what to do after the 4 screws are removed?

I am also wondering if the window might just be stuck or need lubrication.  How can I make sure the glass is free to go down?

Answer
Hi John,
The four screws are on the forward part of the door and your manual should have indicated them. They release the regulator (which has the motor attached) As far as first testing the motor you not only need to confirm that the power is applied but that a good ground is applied to the other wire at the same time. If nothing happens switch power and ground. That will confirm that the motor is or is not working.

Once you remove the four screws you may be able to force the glass up or down a little to confirm that it is not stuck thus burning out a motor.

A channel runs along the bottom of the glass support and that is what needs to be disengaged after you un bolt the regulator and motor. Once you disengage the regulator from that lower channel you can wiggle it out of the access hole. (after you force the glass to the top)
