Jaguar Repair: defroster/heater blower speed, heater blower, ohm meter

Question
QUESTION: Hi Howard, I have a 1985 XJ6 Vanden Plas. Recently the blower stopped working on the high speed setting, not even when set to defrost. I checked fuses in the main and aux. boxes and behind the passenger console panel and all 3 seemed ok. I pulled the console panel on the driver's side to get to the fan control relay and noticed that there is a vacuum solenoid there with two connectors with double pink and double black wires. These connectors have gotten damp somehow and are corroded. I cleaned them up a bit and my high speed came back briefly. Could they be the problem? This solenoid is mounted on the fan control relay on the firewall side.          Thanks, Walt

ANSWER: Hi Walt.
The solenoid with the pink and black wires next to the large relay only operates a blending air door and has nothing to do with fan speeds. My guess is that you disturbed some of the wires on the large relay which is the control for the fan speeds. That large relay is four relays in one and operates the fan speeds by connecting to different resistors wires up high on that same side.
To diagnose this system you need a diagram of the system and volt/ohm meter. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one up on my web site for you to copy. It requires 4 pages.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi Howard, Thanks for the quick reply! Well. as with most things on the XJ6, what seems to be obvious is not. I'd greatly appreciate the diagram as well as any kind of read-outs I should be looking for on the meter. Any procedures I should follow would be appreciated also.
         Thanks, Walt

Answer
Hi Walt,
The diagram and the locator are up on my web site.
Go to, http://mg-tri-jag.net/JagACEle11x1.jpg for the diagram #1 and change the suffix to,
JagACEle21x1.jpg for the #2 diagram and
JagACEle31x1.jpg for the #1 locator and
JagACEle41x1.jpg for the #2 locator.

As for a test procedure, it would require a book of e-mails to do that as the sequence and test procedures are extensive. If you can't work it out from the diagram, you need to purchase the AC/heating system manual from Jaguar for the series III Jag.
