Land Rover Repair: Rust, earler, series 3

Question
Sir, I have a chance to but a 73 Series 3 Ex British Military Land Rover. Every where I go I hear about the frames rusting out and being replaced. Is it common for the earler Rover frames to rust? The seller told me he thought one of the front horns should be replaced as well as a spot on the rear of the vehicle. What should I look for underneath to see how well the frame is holding up. Thank You in advance.

Answer
The parts the seller refers to are components of the frame. It's indeed common for these vehicles to need frames, and with the seller's disclosure I'd assume this truck is pretty rusty.  Make sure you can handle the work needed, or you have the budget to pay for restoration.  These trucks can be great fun but they can take up hundreds of hours of labor when they are run down

In general there is no secret to looking for rust; just raise the truck up and look closely.  Most of the early 73 trucks in New England are pretty far gone unless they have been restored.

Replacement of the frame is a $10,000+ job and it opens the door to other work when the truck is apart.
