Land Rover Repair: Freelander 2003, coolant, different situation

Question
I am the original owner of a 2003 Freelander. The car has approximately 97,000 miles. It is serviced regularly; i.e. oil change every 3 months. Other work include a new timing belt, replaced spark plugs, and replacement of three window motors.
My question has to do with the coolant. I use the orange coolant prescribed for the vehicle. The coolant is beeing consumed .
It (the coolant) must be replaced weekly.
The car exumes an anti-freeze odor.

At times the "check engine" goes on and at other times it does not. I have gotten into the habit of checking it only to find that it has been consumed in short time.

What can I do about this problem? How serious is it? Is this a big job? What would it cost (approximately) to fix this problem?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
If the vehicle has a sweet smell of coolant from the tail pipe and it uses coolant you have an internal failure in the engine.  On a 2003 Freelander the cost of a new engine will far exceed the value of the car, and engines are scarce because this mode of failure has become all too common.  I'm sorry to report bad news, but that is it.

If you do not smell coolant from the exhaust but it leaks on the ground then you have a leak, but that's not what you describe,  Still, a leak is a different situation and one where there is reasonable hope of repair.
