Land Rover Repair: loud vibration when in drive, discovery series ii, horrible sound

Question
My son has a 2002 LR Discovery Series II.  Just recently, the truck is making a horrible sound and vibration when in drive and it sounds like it is right under the driver seat or gear shift.  It sounds fine and no vibrations when the car goes in reverse.  When inside the car when in drive it sounds terrible but someone standing outside the car is unable to hear any of the problem.  The faster the car goes, the worse the sound gets, so we have it parked and are not driving it.  Any guidance is greatly appreciated.  We were thinking it might be the differential but a friend told us that the differential would affect the car when in reverse as well, so it is unlikely.  We are at our wits end with all the $$$ we have had to put into this LR.  The car has 150,000 miles on it.

Answer
First of all, I'm sorry to be slow answering.

Noises under that vehicle could be from several causes, listed in order of probability:
1 - a blown differential or front axle u joint
2 - a jamming emergency brake
3 - a failure in the transfer case
4 - something broken and loose under the chassis (visible)
