Land Rover Repair: noise under load 96 Disco, main bearings, engine rev

hi
  when i drive my 96 disco 2.5tdi i get a grumbling rumble when under load when accelerating above 1500 rev's, but no noise when driving at speed. we have been advised it could be main bearings or cambelt tensioner any idea's.

Hi Jennifer,

it would be nice if you knew where the noise was coming from.  One way to do this is to remove the serpentine belt and start your engine. Rev it to 1500rpm and see if noise is present.

IF noise is present ONLY when gear is engaged, it would seem more like a transfer gearbox or transmission related problem.  This requires more expertise than what most DIY'ers have (and special tools), so my advise would be to find a garage that can service your vehicle.  

If you are in the US or Canada, send me an email and include a general location that you like to find an independent LR mechanic.  I will see if I can locate one for you.  PLease don't give me your address *...just a city you'd like to have your LR serviced in...

Otherwise, you should visit your local LR dealership and it could be expensive, so be prepared.
