Land Rover Repair: Clicking noise when braking, loose pieces, transfer case

Question
QUESTION: Hi I have a 2002 range rover 3.0 diesel HSE and for the past 6 weeks now when I brake I get a very loud clicking noise which sounds like a chain.  You can only hear it when the windows are open and is coming from the front of the car.

You can also hear it when you have the brake peddle pressed and change from park to reverse or drive to neutral etc but can always be heard when braking.

I have had new brake pads a couple of days ago, the front and back armsn and a ball joint replaced.

Could the noise be something to do with the transfer case chain?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: If the noise appeared just after doing all the front end and brake work you cited, it is may well be a workmanship issue.

The transfer case chain would make noise going under throttle as a rule.  For example, stepping on the throttle from a stop could make a loud click-click noise.  Chains don't usually make noise on braking.

QUESTION: no the noise has been doing it for about 6 weeks or so now, I only had the work done on the car a few days ago so its nothing to do with the work that has been done on the car.

thank you

Answer
Is it a really hard clank from right under the car?  That's what a slipping transfer case chain sounds like.  Otherwise I'd look for loose pieces and check the brake retaining hardware carefully.

If the chain is the problem they are not too hard to change.  We do a few of them every year.  If you change the transfer case fluid they will never go bad but that gets forgotten in some Rovers
