Land Rover Repair: 97 Land Rover Disco SD Shifter, head gaskets, shift knobs

Question
I'm seriously considering buying a used Land Rover Disco SD. The guy claimed to have replaced the head gaskets, said he put new heads on the engine and it runs great. The only problem is that the new shifter needs to be installed, (which he has a new one). (I am mechanically inclined and I had my share of complications to repair). It has 153k miles at a price of $1000.
My questions are simple: Do you think this will be a good investment for the price? And lastly, how complicated is it to install the shifter?

Answer
The shifter is a bit of a project to install because you have to remove the center console for access.  But why does it need a shifter?  With all the thousands of LR vehicles we fix at Robison Service I cannot recall a single one coming in needing a shifter.  Shift knobs, cables, etc ate common . . . but not whole shifters.

It's hard to evaluate any $1,000 car over the Internet.  Hopefully it will work out for you.  I guess if it carries you around for a while, it did its job.

Best of luck with the Rover
