Land Rover Repair: 2001 land rover disco 2 dash lights M and S flash, shaft seal, inhibitor switch

Question
QUESTION: I have recently had my disco 2 out of the shop for a input shaft seal replacement and a front drive shaft rebuild.  I drive about a mile down the road from the shop and my "M" and "S" light on my dash start flashing and the "D" on the shift is flashing.  My power is gone on acceleration at stop light when I push the pedal down. It is like it has a governor on it. Please help!
Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: Hi Tim,

I have to ask ...  you returned to the shop that did the repair, right?  Not sure what happened there but clearly the shop must have disconnected a harness or shorted a wire somewhere.  Was this a dealership shop?  I once had major work performed at my dealership and when I paid the bill and drove out the yard, not 1 km later the very problem I just paid close to $4000 to fix, reappeared.

I wonder what could have happened while they serviced your drive shaft - unless the install was incorrect.  Clearly, the shop as some responsibility here.

Best of luck,

QUESTION: Thank you for the response John. I did bring it back to the shop and they are not sure what it is. They did not do anything to it when I brought it back but they are going to check with one of their network experts in IL. This was not a dealership shop but a shop that advertises to work on Land Rovers (one of 3 in Phoenix area).
In the owners manual, it states this is an electrical failure. The light did not come on again and I have driven it for the entire weekend. This intermittent problem could be a pain. What is your take on this? Should I spend alot of money to have them research every wire or does that year/model have a way to hook up a computer to find where the short is?
Thanks again, Tim

Answer
Hi Tim,

to help narrow the search down, consider testing the gearbox starter inhibitor switch harness connector.  Perhaps it was damaged during repair or a short exists because of corrosion.  They have been known to fail and, like many LR harnesses, may allow water to leak in causing the harness to short out and fail.  The start inhibit/neutral safety switch may also need to replaced.  When one these two components faults, the Manual and/or Sport mode lights may trigger unexpectedly.

You will want to find an independent shop that can work with your transmission.  Try these shops in Scottsdale - Eurotek Automotive, McCormicks Auto Center, Rovertech - one of them may be able to help.  The shop should have a Testbook or Autologic diagnostic system to do complete testing otherwise it's just a guess.

I hope this helps,
JohnMc
