Land Rover Repair: 3 amigos, shuttle valve, diagnostic device

Question
"I've searched the web, and have decided that I have the 3 amigos.
I'm sure your familiar with the name. ABS, Hill Descent, and TC lights are on.
Okay, but, they aren't on all the time just occasionally. It's my wife's car (99
Disco SE II) any ideas? maybe just a dirty speed sensor? I can't understand why
they are only on occasionally."

Answer
Hi Brad,

yes, I'm familiar with the '3 amigos', I'm the one who created the name. :)

If the problem is intermittent the common cause is usually within the ABS modulator itself - could be shuttle valve, could be circuit board.  This problem is quite common and LR even came out with a repair kit to address the problem.  If you go to the dealer, take care - they may try to push a complete ABS modulator replacement ($2500).  Mention the repair kit first and if they persist, have them justify why the kit may not work.

Below is a link that goes into some detail about the cause and the fix.  If you are a DIY'er you
may be able to fix this yourself, if not a Dealer or an independent LR mechanic should really be the one to do this repair.  They have the necessary testing/diagnostic device (autologic or T4).

Best of luck,
JohnMc
