Land Rover Repair: Wheel bearing and/or hub replacement?, front wheel bearing, wheel bearings

Question
Hello,

My wife and I enjoy daily usage of our beloved 1995 RRC SWB. Recently, we had the tires replaced and the tire shop told us that the right front wheel bearing is shot and needs to be replaced ASAP. The person at the shop said the wheel moves side to side. I checked this out for myself and the wheel does move. We have driven it like this for about a year or so... does it need to be replaced or tightened? Also, what does something like that cost to do? I know you are a trusted source on these vehicles!

Thank you much.

Answer
The front hub has wheel bearings, and it also has swivel bearings.  Some or both might need service.  Total overhaul of a front hub takes most all day, and parts could run $500.  Adjustment of the bearings takes less than an hour.  So your needed repair - if indeed the hub and bearings are the issue - should fall in that range.

If you have driven it a long time with a lot of looseness, you probably have damage to some of the parts
