Land Rover Repair: 94 LR Discovery shut off while running., air flow meter, definite answers

Question
Hello I own a 94 LR Discovery. My wife was driving the other day and it cut off on her and wouldn't restart. This has happened a few times before but it always restarted. She called me and by the time I got there I was a to start it. Later that night I drove it to class with no problems. After class I was about 3/4 of the way home and it shut off again,it would restart then shut right back down again. After doing that three or four times it would not start at all. I got it towed home where it started again which allowed me to Parallel Park the car. When I came out the next morning it started again, but I did not drive it for fear of it cutting of again. IT recently had a tune-up, but it had cut off a few times before the tune up. I use 89 in the gas tank could that be the problem. Any guidance given would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer
Your most likely problem is an ignition cut out, either from a failing pickup or a failing amplifier.  Unfortunately, you have to catch it in the act for a positive diagnosis.  You could also have an intermittent fuel pump problem or even an intermittent air flow meter or ECU but those are less likely.  You could also have failing main relays.

I know I've given you a lot of possibilities, and no definite answers, but that is the reality of your situation.  You must catch it failing, or replace parts experimentally.

The grade of gas in the tank probably has nothing to do with this
