Question
hi john, i got a 98 land rover D1 4.0 usa model and i was playing on the mud, i had the diferential lock and i try to make a sharp turn and i heard a grinding noise and then a pop, the engine rev really hi so i stop the truck just to find out that the tranny wont go on gear the D,3 and 2nd dont work but 1st and R will, but if you select 1st gear and up shift manually it will go all the way up to D with no problems, i also check the fluid and it was ok red and didn't smell like burn, thanks in advance

Answer
Usually when you hear a pop and grind when off roading you broke an axle shaft or a front cv joint.  First step should be to jack up each wheel, one at a time, and see if any spin free.  If so, that axle or joint has popped.  If not, you need to look in the transfer case or transmission
