Land Rover Repair: warning lights, land rover discovery, 2003 land rover discovery

Question
i have a 2003 land rover discovery.  the srs light periodically comes on and also the antilocking brake system, hill descent control and traction control (all amber) light up all at once periodically.  it seems to happen when i brake a little too quickly. what would be causing this.

Answer
Hi Trent,

interesting problem.  The SRS warning light is indicating either a circuit is open or a short has been detected.  Since it comes on in a random-like fashion, it could be that there is a short somewhere within the SRS system (air bags, decelerometer, seat belt pretensioner, DCU or the bulb itself).  There should be a code stored and can be read by a diagnostic device for LR's.  The SRS is an isolated system so I don't think it is affect by 3 amigos.

The 3 amigos - ABS, HDC and TC, usually indicate a problem within the ABS modulator - usually shuttle valves are the root of all evil. :)  Many LR vehicles have experienced this problem and usually the Stealers replace the ABS modulator.  Sometimes the fault lies with a wheel sensor or perhaps another component within the braking system - but most fingers point to the modulator.

One possibility could be that an ABS sensor is having a random fault (harness problem?) and thus triggering the fault.  If you brake too quickly, the SLABS ECU may detect a fault that affect the ABS and HDC TC ability of the SRS system.  Meanwhile, the jolt may also affect a possible wire short within your SRS system (maybe the DCU located near tranny).

Find a LR shop that can service your SRS and they'll take care of the ABS problem as well.  Special equipment is needed to test these systems out.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
